International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism | 21st August

Today we observe the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism.

On August 21 each year, we honor the lives changed forever by acts of terrorism. #DayOfRemembranceForVictimsOfTerrorism

Why we remember

Victims of terrorism often struggle long after headlines fade. Many lose loved ones and need financial, physical, and psychological support. Their voices and rights deserve to be heard and upheld.

While terror attacks are declining, hundreds of people still die or are injured each year. Attacks are driven by political, ideological, or religious motivations, but the result is the same: innocent people suffer.

How to observe

- Pause today to remember victims around the world

- Support relief organizations that help survivors and families

- Promote understanding between different communities. Empathy and respect help reduce hatred

- If you know a survivor, share information about the United Nations’ Support Portal

- Share your tribute with #DayOfRemembranceForVictimsOfTerrorism

This year, the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism and the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre will screen a documentary on victims and survivors of Boko Haram in Cameroon, and host a photo exhibition and lecture.

History

In 2017, the United Nations General Assembly designated August 21 as the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism.

That year, nearly 75% of all terrorism-related deaths occurred in five countries: Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, and Syria. The day was set aside to strengthen solidarity with victims in these countries and around the world.

Today we stand with survivors and remember those we lost.
